How choosing the right fabric for your conservatory blinds can keep the temperature comfortable all year round.
09/12/2008
If you have a conservatory, or are planning on getting one built you may be interested to know that the choice of blinds can play a vital role in keeping your conservatory at a reasonable temperature.
Conservatories without blinds tend to become very hot in the summer months, and very cold in the winter. To counteract this, a common solution is to install an air conditioning unit. Air conditioning units work very well at controlling the temperature, but as you may know, they can also be very expensive to install and expensive to keep running.
An alternative (or complementary) solution is window blinds. Blinds are an inexpensive way to not only decorate your conservatory but also keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. You may be surprised to learn that your choice of fabric has a direct impact on the effectiveness of the blind at retaining or reflecting heat.
Buying Conservatory Blinds Online:
If you are buying blinds for your conservatory online here are some tips.
Light reflective or fabrics with a solar reflective coating are the most effective at controlling temperature as they have a foil backing which reflects the suns light and heat. SPC or Light Reflective fabrics are available in roller, pleated, vertical and remote control roller blinds.
Honeycomb pleated blinds are the also effective at retaining heat during the winter months, the honeycomb shape provides an extra layer of insulation.
To further increase the energy savings, you can buy perfect fit blinds which fit to UPVC window frames and provide extra insulation because they don’t let any air in or out of the sides. Pleated, Honeycomb and roller blinds are available as Perfect Fit blinds.
Buying Conservatory Blinds Using Our Measure and Installation Service:
If instead you are using our measure and installation service, then our highly knowledgeable advisors will help you choose an “energy saving” fabric to compliment your décor. In certain environments an energy saving of above 60% is possible. At the bare minimum, a standard roller blind coupled with single glazing would yield a saving of around 15%.
The fabrics we suggest for use in conservatory feature a highly reflective film which was developed for the NASA space program. The film aided astronauts by keeping the cold outside and insulating the inside. When applied to our fabrics, blinds become an energy barrier which minimises solar gain and reduces heat loss.
