Following the Pictorial Instructions (PDF, 169KB) these notes are designed to give written explanations for certain options as additional guidance.
Tools Needed:
To make one or more screens from the components supplied, the familiar DIY tools you will need are :-
• Small Hacksaw ( with good, new blade ) • Small Flat file Craft Knife with sharp blade ( if snap-off, use a fresh one ) • Soft-faced Mallet ( or steel hammer wrapped for protection ) • Measuring tape or steel rule • Pencil • Screwdriver • Self-tapping screws for aluminium and appropriate screws ( with wall-plugs if necessary ) • A drill and bits of the sizes shown ( IF you are fixing hinges, turnbuttons, brackets etc. )
COMPONENTS SUPPLIED:
In the pack you will find :-
• 4 x lengths of 25x11mm Aluminium Frame. White powder coated. • 4 x white plastic corners • 1 x piece Black Fibreglass Mesh • 1 x length Rubber Cord for retaining the Mesh • 1 x Cord insertion Tool • 2 x plastic Handles • Window brackets M1 ( only suitable for continental windows – check for alternative fixing methods available as optional extras at the time of purchase or to buy seperately here.)
MEASURE
Step 1.
TIP - Check HOW you will fix your finished screen BEFORE cutting anything. Decide first if you are fixing INSIDE or OUTSIDE
Step 2. Measure your window space for covering with the screen. If your windows open INWARDS and you are fitting from the outside, measure Width (B) and Height (H) on the mainframe where you plan to fix it. This is unusual with UK windows.
If you are fitting AROUND the Opening, from the inside, decide how much extra overlap you can allow for finished screen Exact Width (new B ) and Height (new H)
TIP - Remember to make an allowance for the size of the Hinges and/or magnets if you have chose this method of fixing.
Step 3 & 4. Measure and mark the Aluminium Frame members. Although the frame is only 25mm wide, you must allow 30mm each end for the Corner insert. ( If Height is 750mm total, Corners = 60mm, cut 2 x Frame members [a1] at 690mm ) ( eg if Width is 320mm total, Corners = 60mm, cut 2 x Frame member [a2] at 260mm )
TIP - Cut ONLY when you are sure you have correctly measured.
ASSEMBLE
TIP – Steps 5 & 6 do not apply in UK and you can normally discard these thin metal brackets supplied.
Step 7. Use a soft mallet to tap the Corners into the ends of the frame members.
TIP- make sure ALL the frame members are facing the same way.
Steps 8, 9 & 10. Lay the frame flat, groove side up, and insert the supplied handles into the cord groove on 2 sides. Cover with the supplied sheet of mesh with reasonable overlap all round.
TIP – Hold the mesh down in the centre with a light book or similar to relieve a little tension.
Start centrally on one short side (NOT at a corner) and using first your thumb and then the tool supplied, press the rubber cord supplied into the groove, trapping the mesh in place.
TIP – cut about 25mm off the rubber cord and take the opposite loose end of the mesh and pull it taut and press the cord into the groove to hold it in place as you move to insert the long length down the long side of the frame, also trapping the handle in the groove as you pass.
TIP – ensure you still have a good overlap of mesh and that the mesh is still square to the frame ( diagonal or wavy mesh looks horrible, but it still works !)
Remove the short temporary piece of cord and complete the other 2 sides, ensuring the mesh is tight, but not over-stretched across the frame.
TIP – the soft mesh is to keep out insects, it is not a tennis racket.
Step 11. Using a sharp craft knife, slice through the overlap mesh to remove the surplus.
TIP – Hold the blade at an angle against the OUTER edge of the frame and work slowly to ensure you do not slip and cut the mesh on the inside. It is usually best to pull the blade towards you and to hold the far edge of the mesh to keep it tight whilst cutting.
Step 12
TIP – by deciding in advance HOW you will install the screen, you will already know which fixing method you will be using.
Hinges and Magnet – both fix to the 11mm edge of the frame
TIP – use a punch to indent where you plan to drill.
Offset Brackets – usually fixed onto the window frame or surface and allow the screen to be lifted up under the long leg pair and lowered down behind the short leg pair ( or vice-versa)
Turnbuttons – are fixed to the window frame or surface and twisted out allowing the screen to be positioned, before twisting back to trap the screen tight against the surface.
Alternatively, you may choose to drill through and permanently screw the screen to the frame……or find some other method that suits you needs.
SAFETY NOTE:
The screen is to keep out insects. It is NOT designed to prevent animals or children from passing and should never be considered safe for this purpose in windows or doors.
