Following the Pictorial Instructions (PDF, 417KB) these notes are designed to give written explanations for certain options as additional guidance.
To make the Hinged Door Screen from the components supplied, the familiar DIY tools you will need are:-
• Small Hacksaw (with good, new blade) • Small Flat file • Craft Knife with sharp blade (if snap-off, use a fresh one) • Soft-faced Mallet (or steel hammer wrapped for protection) • Measuring tape or steel rule • Pencil • Screwdriver • Self-tapping screws for aluminium and appropriate screws (with wall-plugs if necessary) • A drill and bits of the sizes shown (For fixing hinges, etc.)
COMPONENTS SUPPLIED
In the pack you will find :-
• 4 x lengths of 32x11mm Aluminium Frame. White powder coated. • 4 x white plastic corners • 2 x lengths of 32x11 Reinforcing Profile. White powder coated. • 4 x Reinforcement Connectors • 1 x Kick Plate. White powder coated. • 1 x piece Black Fibreglass Mesh • 1 x length Rubber Cord for retaining the Mesh • 1 x Cord insertion Tool • 2 x plastic Handles ( 1 Internal, 1 External ) • 4 x Hinges • 2 x Magnets • Various screws identified by type and size
MEASURE
Step 1.
TIP – FIRST Check HOW you will fix your finished screen BEFORE cutting anything.
Note: UK Doors may require a sub-frame (An aluminium adjustable frame is available for this product – code 03884 for reveal fixing, call 0161 367 9013 for details) to allow for the projecting external door handle.
Decide first if you are fixing INSIDE or OUTSIDE the door reveal.
TIP – Ensure you make allowance for the Hinges and Magnets which fit to the edges of the door frame.
Measure the door space to be covered by the screen . If your door opens INWARDS and you are fitting on the outside, measure Width (B) and Height (H) on the door mainframe or new sub-frame where you plan to fix it.
If you are fitting around the Opening, on the inside, the same applies.
If you are using the available aluminium sub-frame see instructions at the end of these notes.
Step 2. Measure and mark the Aluminium Frame members. Although the frame is only 32mm wide, you must allow 36mm each end for the Corner insert.
( If Height is 2000mm total, Corners = 72mm, cut 2 x Frame members [a1] at 1928mm )
( eg if Width is 900mm total, Corners = 72mm, cut 2 x Frame member [a2] at 828mm )
Reinforcing Profiles [c] should be cut at Width minus 68mm (If Width is 900mm total, cut 2 x Reinforcements at 832mm)
TIP - Cut ONLY when you are sure you have correctly measured and ensure you make square cuts.
TIP – Do NOT cut the Kick Plate sheet until you have completed making-up the frame. That way you can ensure exact measuring to fit the final product.
ASSEMBLE
Step 3. Use a soft mallet to tap the Corners into the ends of the frame members.
TIP- make sure ALL the frame members are facing the same way.
Clip the Reinforcement connectors on the ends of the profiles and push into place. Fit one at approximately halfway on the frame and the second with the top edge approximately 120mm from the bottom of the frame.( to allow kick plate to be fastened )
Steps 4, 5 & 6. Lay the frame flat, groove side up, and insert the supplied internal loop handle into the cord groove adjacent to the centre reinforcement. Cover with the supplied sheet of mesh with reasonable overlap all round.
TIP – Hold the mesh down in the centre with a light book or similar to relieve a little tension.
Start centrally on one short side (NOT at a corner) and using first your thumb and then the tool supplied, press the rubber cord supplied into the groove, trapping the mesh in place.
TIP – cut about 25mm off the rubber cord and take the opposite loose end of the mesh and pull it taut and press the cord into the groove to hold it in place as you move to insert the long length down the long side of the frame, also trapping the handle in the groove as you pass. The mesh can be fixed into the bottom reinforcement (preferred) or the bottom frame member.
TIP – ensure you still have a good overlap of mesh and that the mesh is still square to the frame ( diagonal or wavy mesh looks horrible, but it still works !)
Remove the short temporary piece of cord and complete the other 2 sides, ensuring the mesh is tight, but not over-stretched across the frame.
TIP – the soft mesh is to keep out insects, it is not a tennis racket.
Step 6. Using a sharp craft knife, slice through the overlap mesh to remove the surplus.
TIP – Hold the blade at an angle against the OUTER edge of the frame and work slowly to ensure you do not slip and cut the mesh on the inside. It is usually best to pull the blade towards you and to hold the far edge of the mesh to keep it tight whilst cutting.
Step 7. On the smooth side of the frame, fix the External cup handle at the junction of the reinforcement and the side frame adjacent to the Internal loop handle, with the 3 type E screws provided.
TIP – Ensure you do NOT drill through both faces.
TIP - This positioning has dictated which edge will carry the Hinges and which will take the Magnet.
Step 8. On the edge of the frame opposite the Handles, measure and mark the position to fix the 4 Hinges with the 8 type B screws provided.
TIP – Having marked the position with a pencil, use a punch to indent where you plan to drill.
TIP- Position the Top and Bottom Hinges close to the Corner and the other 2 equidistant between them.
TIP – Ensure you do NOT drill through both faces.
Step 9. On the opposite edge of the frame ( Handle side ) measure and mark the position to fix the Magnets with the 4 type C screws provided.
TIP – Having marked the position with a pencil, use a punch to indent where you plan to drill.
TIP- Position the Top and Bottom Magnets close to the Corners, level with the Top and Bottom Hinges.
TIP – Ensure you do NOT drill through both faces.
Step 10. Measure the width of the finished frame at the Bottom and at the reinforcement height ( should be equal ) and measure and cut the Kick Plate sheet to this size.
TIP- Ensure the Kick Plate will fix squarely across the frame to the two Bottom cross members first. Make adjustments if necessary before fixing it.
On the smooth face of the frame at the Bottom, mark the position for fixing the Kick Plate using the 8 type F screws provided.
TIP- Use some kind of adhesive tape or clamp to hold the Kick Plate square whilst drilling and drill 2 opposite corners first to hold in place for the next fixings.
TIP – Having marked the position with a pencil, use a punch to indent where you plan to drill.
TIP – Ensure you do NOT drill through both faces of the frame.
This completes the preparation an assembly of the Door Frame unit.
The next steps concern mounting the frame in the Door opening space.
TIP – by deciding in advance HOW you will install the Door screen, you will already know which fixing method you will be using.
Step 11. If you are fixing to an existing or purpose-built sub-frame, offer the Door screen up against it and find a means of positioning it at its operating height, to ensure it is not obstructed.
TIP – Floor clearance should be minimised. Balance the Door screen on a couple of magazines.
Carefully mark the position of the Top and Bottom hinges onto the sub-frame.
TIP – Connect the 2-piece Hinge together and fold it into its final position allowing you to mark through the holes in the right places.
Fix the Top Hinge first. Screw the Back-plate to the sub-frame using the type A screws provided. Support the weight of the Door screen and repeat the procedure for the Bottom Hinge. When you are happy these work, repeat the procedure for the 2 central Hinges to complete the job.
Step 11 alternative. If you are using the Windhager aluminium sub-frame code 03884, measure the opening into which you will fix it and transfer those measurements to become the finished size of your sub-frame.
Measure and mark the Aluminium Frame members ensuring you allow for the size of the Top Corners.
Follow the diagrammatic instructions for preparing the Bottom of each side piece which will incorporate the Adjustable Foot. Offer the sub-frame into the reveal opening and adjust each foot so that the sub-frame becomes firmly wedged into the opening allowing clearance space for the external door handle.
Follow the installation instructions above as if fixing to original door frame.
SAFETY NOTE:
The screen is to keep out insects. It is NOT designed to prevent animals or children from passing and should never be considered safe for this purpose in doors or windows.
