DIY Fly Screen Frame Instructions
23/12/2008
Following the Pictorial Instructions (PDF) these notes are designed to give written explanations for certain options as additional guidance.
Plastic D.I.Y. Fly screen Frames are available to buy online, here.
To make one or more screens from the components supplied, the familiar DIY tools you will need are :-
• Small Hacksaw ( with good, new blade ) • Small Flat file Craft Knife with sharp blade ( if snap-off, use a fresh one ) or pair of Scissors • Measuring tape or steel rule • Pencil • A drill and bits of the sizes shown ( IF you are fixing hinges, turnbuttons, brackets etc. )
COMPONENTS SUPPLIED In the pack you will find :-
• 2 x 1500mm lengths of White Plastic Frame profile with self- adhesive backing tape.
ALSO NEEDED Insect Mesh ( see www.newblinds.co.uk for Flyscreen Mesh )
TIP – You may also wish to buy turnbuttons or brackets to support your finished Frame – but please note, these are NOT designed for use with the D.I.Y. Frame and may not help to seal the opening.
Other Fixed Frame Kits and Retractable Insect Screens will provide a more permanent long-lasting solution.
MEASURE
TIP - Check HOW you will fix your finished screen BEFORE cutting anything. UK windows require a different method from Continental windows. Decide first if you are fixing INSIDE or OUTSIDE
Measure your window space for covering with the screen. If your windows open INWARDS and you are fitting from the outside, measure Width (B) and Height (H) on the mainframe where you plan to fix it.
This is unusual with UK windows but it IS the solution this Frame is designed for.( The adhesive tape is to stick it permanently)
Step 1. IF you are fixing the Frame permanently with the adhesive tape, first thoroughly clean the surface on which you will stick it.
Measure and mark the Frame members. You may choose to use square cuts ( butt joint ) or 45° cuts ( mitre joint ). TIP - Cut ONLY when you are sure you have correctly measured.
Step 2. Cut the Frame profile for the required sizes.
TIP- The profile cuts more precisely when folded, clipped together.
Do NOT remove the protective cover paper from the adhesive tape.
Step 3. Open the Frame profile and lay on a flat surface, in a square.
TIP – Make sure all pieces are the same way up ( with Tape side upmost ) and hold the Frame shape temporarily with adhesive tape across the joints at the corners.
Step 4. Measure and cut the Insect Mesh to a size which will fit within the open Frame.
TIP – Ensure good overlap of Mesh beyond the clip feature which will eventually trap it. Note, as the edges are hidden they do not need to be perfect or equal all around.
Step 5. Lay the frame flat, open side up, and insert the Insect Mesh with reasonable overlap all round.
TIP – Hold the mesh down in the centre with a light book or similar to relieve a little tension. TIP – the soft mesh is to keep out insects, it is not a tennis racket.
Step 6. Fix the Frame around the opening using the chosen method.
TIP- IF using the adhesive tape on the back of the Frame, peel back the tape from each side just a little but remove it from the Top rail only at first whilst positioning the Frame over the opening. Then peel off the protective paper from the other sides as you press it into position.
SAFETY NOTE:
The screen is to keep out insects. It is NOT designed to prevent animals or children from passing and should never be considered safe for this purpose in windows or doors.
