Electric Blinds - Suitable for Bathrooms?

16/12/2008

As you will know electricity and water do not mix, so you may have doubts about whether or not to put our “electric blinds” in your bathroom.

The first point to make here is that when we refer to “electric blinds”, we are talking specifically about the battery powered motorised remote control blinds sold on NewBlinds.co.uk.

We are not providing advice on blinds supplied by any other company.

The following should provide you with enough information to decide whether our remote control blinds are suitable for your application…

Battery Operated:
The remote control blinds that are currently available to buy online from NewBlinds.co.uk are operated by motors which are powered by low voltage batteries as opposed to high voltage mains electricity. This significantly reduces the risk associated with using electric appliances where they may be exposed to water or moisture.

Enclosed Motor:
For venetian blinds, the motor is enclosed within the head rail. For roller blinds, the motor is enclosed within the roller tube. This means that light steam or condensation should not cause a problem with the motor.

Prevent Direct Exposure to Water:
We would suggest that you do not position the blind above a bath, sink or shower. In the unlikely event the blind or the battery falls into the water, this may cause an electric shock.

We would also suggest that you do not place the blind anywhere that it may become wet through splashing, as this may cause a hazard or malfunction.

The same is to be said for the remote control. We do not suggest you leave a remote control in a bathroom for too long.

Buy a waterproof remote control handset:
Our remote control roller and blackout blinds use Somfy components in terms of the battery, the motor and the remote handset. If you are thinking of purchasing a remote control roller blind for a bathroom, you may be interested to hear we can offer a waterproof remote control handset, named ‘Patio’. This is currently not available to purchase on the website but if you are interested you can ring us on 0161 367 9013 to enquire or purchase one.

Choose an appropriate fabric type:
Another thing you must take into consideration is the fabric type. Some fabrics can become mouldy over time if exposed to damp conditions. We do have some fabrics such as Carnival which is an Ultra Fresh fabric which means it has special treatment which prevents it from going mouldy. There are also PVC fabrics which don’t absorb moisture.

Aluminium Venetian blinds are able to withstand damp conditions such as contact with steam, but if in direct contact with water through splashing they can become tarnished over time.

Alternatives:
If you do not think remote control blinds are suitable for your application, then a suitable alternative might be a standard non-motorised roller blind using a water resistant fabric, such as Colorado.
